ALEXANDER<\/a> (1982-1983).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A young man journeys down an endless road<br \/>\nin the company of many others.<br \/>\nThe road leads across a rocky plain<br \/>\nwhere nothing grows.<br \/>\nThe sun\u2019s fire burns from morning to evening.<br \/>\nThey can\u2019t find shade or coolness anywhere.<br \/>\nA harrowing wind stirs up huge dust clouds.<\/p>\n<p>The youth is driven forward by an incomprehensible anxiety<br \/>\nand tormented by a scorching thirst.<br \/>\nSometimes he asks himself or one of his traveling companions<br \/>\nabout the goal of their pilgrimage.<br \/>\nBut the answer is uncertain and tentative.<br \/>\nHe himself has forgotten why he ever set out on his journey.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s also forgotten his native land<br \/>\nand the journey\u2019s final destination.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, one evening he finds himself standing in a forest.<br \/>\nDusk sets in and all is quiet.<br \/>\nPerhaps the evening wind sighs through the tall trees.<br \/>\nHe stands amazed<br \/>\nbut also anxious and suspicious.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s all alone<br \/>\nand he discovers his hearing is weak,<br \/>\nsince his ears are inflamed from the merciless light of the day.<br \/>\nHis mouth and throat are parched from the long pilgrimage.<br \/>\nHis lips are cracked,<br \/>\npressed together around curses and harsh words.<br \/>\nSo he doesn\u2019t hear the ripple of flowing water<br \/>\nand doesn\u2019t notice its reflection in the dusk.<br \/>\nHe stands deaf and blind at the edge of the spring<br \/>\nunaware of its existence.<br \/>\nLike a sleepwalker he wanders unaware between the sparkling pools.<br \/>\nHis blind skill is remarkable and soon he\u2019s back onto the road<br \/>\nin the burning, shadowless light.<\/p>\n<p>One night by the camp fire he\u2019s seated near an old man<br \/>\nwho\u2019s telling some children about the forests and springs.<br \/>\nThe youth recalls what he\u2019s been through,<br \/>\nbut faintly and indistinctly<br \/>\nas in a dream.<br \/>\nHe turns to the old man, skeptical yet courteous, and asks,<br \/>\n\u201cWhere does all this water come from?\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cIt comes from a mountain whose peak is covered by a mighty cloud\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat kind of cloud?\u201d the youth asks.<br \/>\nThe old man answers,<br \/>\n\u201cEvery man carries within him hopes, fears and longings.<br \/>\nEvery man shouts out his despair or bears it in his mind.<br \/>\nSome pray to a particular God.<br \/>\nOthers address their cries to the void.<br \/>\nThis despair, this hope,<br \/>\nthis dream of deliverance,<br \/>\nall these cries, all these tears,<br \/>\nare gathered over thousands and thousands of years<br \/>\nand condense into an unmeasurable cloud around a high mountain.<br \/>\nOut of the cloud rain flows down the mountain<br \/>\nforming the streams and rivers that flow through the great forests.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s how the springs are formed where you can quench your thirst<br \/>\nwash your badly burnt face<br \/>\ncool your blistered feet.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody has at some time heard of the mountain, the cloud and the springs<br \/>\nbut most people anxiously remain on the dusty road in the blazing light.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy do they stay there?\u201d asks the youth in great astonishment.<br \/>\n\u201cI certainly don\u2019t know\u201d, replies the old man.<br \/>\n\u201cPerhaps they\u2019ve convinced themselves and each other<br \/>\nthat they\u2019ll reach their unknown destination by evening\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat unknown destination?\u201d asks the young man.<br \/>\nThe old man shrugs his shoulders.<br \/>\n\u201cIn all probability the destination does not exist.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s deception or imagination.<br \/>\nI myself am on my way to the forests and the springs.<br \/>\nI was there once when I was young<br \/>\nand now I\u2019m trying to find my way back.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not easy, let me tell you\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning the youth set out with the old man<br \/>\nto seek the mountain, the cloud, the forests and the rippling springs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A story told by Isak Jacobi (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erland_Josephson\">Erland Josephson<\/a>) in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ingmar_Bergman\">Ingmar Bergman<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fanny_and_Alexander\">FANNY &#038;
