the man woke up a golem
\nand muttered something about emunah
\nand lost his fingertips in the negel vaser
\nand a strange light shone down upon its water<\/p>\n

i had to, he thought, because of Shibtah
\nand today is the day i must feed my child
\nstill flesh
\none day may he grow into mud
\nmixed in the ash of a red heiffer<\/p>\n

you will forgive that i won’t bathe or anoint
\nthis Yom Kippur
\nyou will accept my din
\nelse i would lose the life given to me
\nand your life might then soon be forfeit as well<\/p>\n

for you dared stare at that rainbow
\nlet your transgression endear you to the plain of ash and salt
\ni trust you to never look up
\nand to stare at the road instead
\nor into my eyes, like endless cups filled with wine<\/p>\n

you will ignore this miasma
\nit is the perfume of the world before t’shuva
\nfollow me in my ways
\nor see your world turn to clay
\ni will teach you the meaning of affliction
\nyou and all your Asherot<\/p>\n

what’s this? a twig? but i abhor your seed
\ni will break it and twist it off
\nmy luster is that of gleaming fingernail
\ncaught in the flame of twisted wick
\nno outside ideas will germinate in me<\/p>\n

for i am Truth, he thought
\ni am Gabriel and Adam Qadmon
\ni am the answer to your weakness
\nin my palace every table is set perfectly<\/p>\n

so i place two crowns on my head
\nthat reflect no color
\nand set myself upon the Way
\ntaking in and setting straight all those who linger to the side
\nof the road
\nendangering themselves in ruins
\nand in the myriad wandering spirits that dwell there<\/p>\n

sometimes when i pass, i feel them too
\nbut i ignore their temptation and ground them out
\nwhile saying a blessing with the proper devotion
\nthat they look like me
\nthat all is nullified and undistinguished

\nThis is a poem written as a follow-up to a poem composed by Yonah Lavery-Yisraeli, here<\/a>. It is inspired by material I’ve learned in the eighth chapter of the Talmud Bavli, Mase\u1e25et Yoma, at Yeshivat Hadar, where I am studying on a year-long fellowship. Please let it be a prompt for your own interpretation and imagination. I can only say that for myself, this poem was channeling frustration and anger, mainly directed at certain adherents of a particular flavor of neo-\u1e25aredism who express all manner of violent, ignorant, and dangerous beliefs under the guise of their righteousness.
