The tests below help identify to what degree your web browser currently supports our best practices for displaying Unicode (UTF-8) Hebrew text in web pages using CSS @font-face in HTML and SVG files. Based on our test results, as of February 2012, the only web browsers passing all of our Unicode/CSS @font-face Hebrew tests are the following:
- Chrome 15 on Windows OS
- Internet Explorer 9 on Windows OS
(See our test results to see how well your browser supports Hebrew on the web.)
The tests reveal errors in the way web browsers render bidirectional text in Right-To-Left (RTL) languages like Hebrew with or without CSS @font-face. I wrote these tests to guide web browser developers and site developers in better supporting Hebrew on the web. If you are a site developer, read my guide on How-to Display Unicode Hebrew Text using CSS @font-face.
For these tests, I chose a verse from a book of the Hebrew Bible containing all the letters of the Aleph-Bet — Zephania 3:8. Shorter pangrams exist, but none include vowels (niqud) and cantillation marks (ta'amim). Not all the cantillation marks in the unicode Hebrew character set are represented in the pangram, but the benefit of the verse is that it shows the positioning logic of the diacritical marks in practice.
